Scissor Skills & Development: What’s Really Happening

When a child uses scissors, they’re doing so much more than just cutting paper. Scissor practice helps build crucial hand strength and fine motor control, which supports everything from writing to dressing. It also boosts hand-eye coordination and bilateral coordination—meaning they learn to use both sides of the body together effectively. Scissor activities require focus, helping improve attention span and task completion. Behind the scenes, kids are also sharpening their visual motor integration and visual perceptual skills, both of which are key for reading, writing, and navigating their environment. It’s a simple tool that packs a powerful punch in early development!
